Ingredients

  • 500 g Fresh green beans Trimmed; fresh works best
  • 4 strips Bacon Adds smoky richness
  • 1 small Onion Finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic Fresh only not paste
  • 1 tbsp Brown sugar Balances smokiness
  • 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar Adds brightness
  • ½ tsp Black pepper Adjust to taste
  • Salt As needed Add carefully bacon is salty

Equipment

  • Deep skillet or saute pan
  • Knife + chopping board
  • Wooden spoon
  • Lid (important for simmering phase)

Method

Step 1: Start With Bacon (Don’t Rush This)
  1. Cook the bacon on medium heat.
  2. You’ll hear that gentle sizzle—and that smell? That’s your flavor base.
  3. Once crispy, remove and set aside.
  4. Keep the fat in the pan.
Step 2: Build the Flavor Base
  1. Add onions into that bacon fat.
  2. Cook until slightly golden—not just soft.
  3. I once stopped too early here, and the dish tasted flat.
  4. Then add garlic. Stir for 30 seconds. Don’t burn it.
Step 3: Add the Beans
  1. Toss in green beans.
  2. Add:
  3. Brown sugar
  4. Black pepper
  5. A pinch of salt
  6. Stir everything.
Step 4: The Simmer Magic
  1. Cover and cook on low heat for 20–25 minutes.
  2. This is where transformation happens.
  3. The beans soften, and develop that signature bbq green beans recipe depth.
Step 5: Finish Strong
  1. Uncover.
  2. Add:
  3. Crumbled bacon
  4. Apple cider vinegar
  5. Cook uncovered for 5 minutes to completely dry any liquid.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning.

Notes

Serve warm with grilled meats for best flavor.
